In our series of articles exploring the financial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, this time we explore: where are the businesses most reliant on JobKeeper?

The JobKeeper Payment scheme is a temporary subsidy for businesses significantly affected by COVID-19. Eligible employers, sole traders and other entities can apply to receive $1,500 per eligible employee per fortnight. About 35% of Australian businesses have applied for JobKeeper and the payment supports 28% of the employed workforce as at the end of June 2020.

We’ve used data from the Treasury and the Australian Bureau of Statistics, to estimate and map, the proportion of businesses in each Local Government Area (LGA) who have registered to receive the JobKeeper Payment.

LGAs with the highest proportion of its businesses registered to receive the payment are coloured red, and those with the lowest proportion are coloured green:

  • The LGAs with the highest proportion of their businesses registered to receive the payment are in tourist and residential areas. The Byron LGA is the LGA with the highest proportion of its businesses (60%) registered to receive the payment.
  • In contrast, most capital city CBDs have about 30% of their businesses registered.

View our map below (last updated 22 July 2020).

How do I use the map?

Click on an LGA to see what proportion of its businesses are registered to receive the JobKeeper payment. The chart to the right of the map will update with the business mix of the LGA.

What does the ‘LGA characteristics’ chart show?

The LGA characteristics charts show the business mix of the LGA:

  • The blue bars shows the proportion of registered businesses by industry for that LGA.
  • The black lines show the proportion of registered businesses by industry for Australia as a whole.
