Where are the businesses most reliant on JobKeeper (May)?

In our series of articles exploring the financial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, we look at where are the businesses most reliant on JobKeeper, using the latest data (May 2020).
The JobKeeper Payment scheme is a temporary subsidy for businesses significantly affected by COVID-19. Eligible employers, sole traders and other entities can apply to receive $1,500 per eligible employee per fortnight.
We’ve used the latest data (JobKeeper processed applications in May) from the Treasury and the Australian Bureau of Statistics, to estimate and map, the proportion of businesses in each Local Government Area (LGA) who have registered to receive the JobKeeper Payment. LGAs with the highest proportion of its businesses registered to receive the payment are coloured red, and those with the lowest proportion are coloured green.
Since our last look at the JobKeeper numbers (JobKeeper processed applications in April) it’s clear the increase in JobKeeper reliance between April and May has been felt across the country, but there is a deep reliance on the scheme across Australia’s tourist regions. Taylor Fry Principal Alan Greenfield says “in regional locations where tourism is a big part of the local economy everyone is reliant on tourist spending in one way or another. Whether you’re a small plumbing business, a laundry or a café, you’re either doing business directly with tourists or servicing tourist businesses. It’s all inter-connected”.
While the percentage of businesses reliant on JobKeeper in inner city locations is lower than the national average, the figures reflect a significant challenge for service businesses in these areas. “A lot of small businesses in our CBDs are set up to service the workers who spend their working days in the city. Inner city food outlets, dry cleaners, medical practices and retail shops all rely on the Monday-to-Friday foot traffic to come back. These businesses can’t easily move online and setting up shop somewhere else creates significant financial and operational implications”, says Greenfield.

How do I use the map?
Click on an LGA to see what proportion of its businesses are registered to receive the JobKeeper payment. The chart to the right of the map will update with the business mix of the LGA.
What does the ‘LGA characteristics’ chart show?
The LGA characteristics charts show the business mix of the LGA:
- The blue bars shows the proportion of registered businesses by industry for that LGA.
- The black lines show the proportion of registered businesses by industry for Australia as a whole.
